Description

Sophie is eight years old and has severe physical and intellectual disabilities. Rett Syndrome has left Sophie unable to walk and talk like other children her age. Sophie lives at home with her family and requires 24/7 care including continuous Jejunostomy feeding via a feed pump, numerous medications and regular stimulating therapies.

Sophie has a beautiful personality, talks with her eyes and loves going to the movies, watching her dvd's and hanging out with her two brothers Lachlan and Nicholas.

Last year’s funds raised were used to purchase bedrail protectors. 2009 was a very challenging year for Sophie who had to spend four months in the Royal Children's Hospital after a simple feeding tube insertion perforated her bowel. The pain caused Sophie to wiggle around her bed frantically and the bedrails provided vital safety.

Our dream for Sophie this year is to achieve better communication through the use of a communication device. Sophie’s other needs include:

• Speech therapy to assist with communication device

• Medical expenses for major spinal surgery in July to correct the 67o curve

• Second skin supportive garment to assist post surgery which also helps with semi independent standing and helps maintain Sophie’s posture in her wheelchair

• Pool hoist to assist with post operative rehabilitation

All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible and there are no additional credit card charges. The Developing Foundation Inc. commits 90% of our target directly to Sophie’s expenses. The balance is used by the charity to cover administration and credit expenses.

Any support you are able to offer is very much appreciated. If you are unable to make a donation there are other ways to help, for example:

• Send Sophie’s web page to your family and friends

• Join Team Sophie at the Riverwalk
