Description
I want to live a happy inclusive independent life. With your help I won’t let my disability get in the way of my ability”
I WANT TO SHARE MY STORY WITH YOU NOT SO YOU CAN FEEL SORRY FOR ME, BUT SO YOU CAN HELP ME TRIUMPH THROUGH WHATEVER LIFE PUTS BEFORE ME.
Hi, I’m Riley Saban.
I’m just a typical eight year old boy. I love catching lizards and hanging out with my mates. I am always happy; I’m friendly and I am very smart. I have the best sense of humor and I love to hear jokes. I love Steve Irwin because I am passionate about reptiles too. I love martial arts and I go to karate lessons. I live with my mum, dad, my younger brother Chase, and my younger sister Paige.
I have Cerebral Palsy Spastic Quadriplegia caused through a lack of oxygen to the brain following a very traumatic complicated birth. It is the most severe form of Cerebral Palsy. This means that I can’t control the motor movements of my trunk, upper and lower limbs. I struggle to do things that people take for granted and I always need someone to care for me.
Due to my spasticity, my muscles are tight all the time, resulting in severe pain. I have trouble sleeping at night. It is very strenuous for me to get my body to do what I want it to do. (BUT I NEVER GIVE UP)
I go to a local primary school and I am in Grade Two. I am doing very well in a mainstream classroom and I keeping up with my peers. I especially enjoy lunchtime because I love playing with my friends.
I can speak, but not everyone understands me, so I communicate using a communication device called a Dynovox. I have a little silver sticker that is on my head and it acts as my mouse. I also use a computer to do my school work.
I wear a lot of equipment including a second skin everyday on my body, upper limbs and my hands. It’s a suit that helps keep my body in the right position. I wear orthotics on my feet to keep them in the right position and also wear a brace on my hips so they stay in alignment.
I just got a powered wheelchair which I control with slight head movements. A powered wheelchair gives me some independence and that is all I strive for. I want to be able to do things for myself.
For me to achieve the life I want for myself and what my family wants for me, we all have to work really hard (especially me). I have regular trips to Sydney Children’s Hospital for Botox injections and checkups.
I need Physiotherapy, Hydrotherapy, and Speech Therapy, Massage Therapy and Occupational Therapy and lots of “expensive” equipment.
My family and friends are going to help raise funds towards my unmet therapy and equipment.
